Homer Lake Forest Preserve
Our family loves to come out here and run around the prairie during the winter months. It’s a beautiful backdrop for a walk or family photo shoot!
Pere Marquette State Park
Even in a rainstorm, this state park is magnificent. I love the Midwest, but sometimes it’s nice to feel like you’ve escaped for a day or two.
Kickapoo State Recreation Area
Kickapoo is our go-to getaway when we don’t want to drive very far, but we want the option to hike our tails off or splash around in the creek.
White Pines Forest State Park
Even though there are only a few miles of trails through White Pines Forest, the ancient trees and charming creeks will keep you here for hours.
Silver Springs State Fish & Wildlife Area
Truly off the beaten path, this family-friendly hike, boat, and ski location is just a short drive away from several other lovely outdoor spots.
Clinton Lake Loop
This 11 mile loop trail weaves around the northern part of Clinton Lake, taking you up and down some serious Illinois hills.
Weldon Springs State Park
This state parks is more well-known for it’s trout fishing, so enjoy the quiet trails through forest and prairie.

The expansive park systems along the major rivers in northwestern Illinois provide an abundance of low-traffic hiking and camping (but don’t tell anyone!)

This park will always be a little special to me, because it’s so close to my childhood home - plus, now I get to drag my entire supportive sibling group (who still live in the area) out on hikes!
